1. Replace the Battery
Car batteries may need to be replaced every few years. If your car needs a new battery, you can do this on your own.
- Purchase a new battery. Ensure it fits your car’s engine size as well as the make and model.
- Remove the old battery by removing the cable clamps.
- Remove the positive and negative cables then unscrew the battery holders.
- Lift the battery out and then put the new battery in.
- Wipe the clamps to remove any debris before reattaching.
- Reconnect the cables and you’re all done!
2. Replace Non-Headlight Bulbs
Cars have a variety of bulbs. Fog light bulbs, license plate bulbs, and side marker bulbs all need to be replaced when they burn out.
Is there a bulb on your car that no longer works? You can easily replace the bulb on your own.
Head to an auto shop store to find replacement bulbs. You’ll then remove the retaining screws and remove the lens.
Once the lens is off, pull the bulb out of the socket. When handling new bulbs, be sure to wear gloves. This prevents oils from seeping onto the glass.
3. Paint Touch Up
Paint chips happen. Leaving paint chips unfixed can lead to even worse cosmetic damage. In some cases, chipped paint can allow rust to build up.
So how can you touch up chipped paint? All you need is:
- Matching touch up paint
- Paint applicators
- Grease/wax remover
Once you have everything you need, you can get started with this DIY repair.
- Clean the chipped area to remove any debris.
- Dip the applicator into the paint.
- Carefully dab the paint on the chipped area.
- Let the paint dry for 30-45 minutes.
- Wax the car to seal the new paint.
4. Leaky Sunroof
Sunroofs are great… that is, until they start to leak. If your sunroof is leaking, chances are the drains are clogged.
Fixing a leaky sunroof only takes a few minutes!
Open the sunroof and locate the drain holes. Use a shop vac to suck out any debris.
To ensure all debris has been removed, drip water into the drain. If the water falls onto the floor, the drains are working as they should!
For more severe clogs, use a speedometer cable for a better reach into the drain.
5. Replace the Air Filter
Air filters can get quite dirty. To replace the air filter, first ensure that it needs to be changed.
To remove and inspect the air filter:
1. Unclip the retainers that hold the air filter box together
2. Remove the filter from the box
3. Use a shop light to inspect the filter
4. If the filter blocks more than 50% of the light, it needs to be replaced
