Buying a car online

image of a new car available online

For me buying a car online or even a new car locally can be exciting but intimidating at the same time. The Internet can help you overcome the negative feelings by giving you a means to shop anonymously.

There is nothing like walking the lot privately with no interference or interruptions. Online car sales options can help you find the automobile that you want and often pay a reduced price for the new vehicle.

Here are some of the car questions that will be answered in this short article. How do you buy a car online? What do dealerships require for online sales? What steps should you follow for a successful transaction and the best purchase experience?

Buying a car online from a dealership

Not all dealerships have an online presence. Conversely, not all dealerships with an online presence offer you access to their entire inventory.

Many dealers only put a small percentage of their vehicles online, in hopes of enticing you to visit the property. Finding the right dealership means finding the right selection of vehicles.

This means that you will need to know no exactly what type of vehicle you are interested in, prior to browsing the online inventory. Knowing what you want can save you time and money in the end. You might also experience buyers remorse if you waver and settle for something else.

Once you have determined the type of car that you want, you will need to determine the brand you wish to purchase. This will involve investigating several dealers online to determine which one has the best deal on the right model for you.

This also means finding out what options each vehicle comes with. Most online dealers will list the available options in plain sight. Do not be put off if you do not see the model you want.

A simple query to the sales department will tell you if they have what you want, as well as the available colors, options and more. Querying the sales department will also give you the information that you need about the purchase process. Can you complete it online or will you have to pay a visit to the dealership in person?

Buying a car online paperwork

However, most of them will require that you come into the dealership to sign the paperwork in person. However, some dealerships will mail the documents to you for signing, allowing you to mail them back when completed.

You will have to beware of some dealerships that claim to offer online service. These dealers might offer only a partial online buying experience. In this case you will still have to visit the dealership in person for all paperwork completion, financing and for vehicle pickup.

This in my opinion negates most of the benefits of online new car shopping. This also means that you have to find a ride and take the time to go to the delivery appointment. And don't forget all the hand shaking that goes along with a dealership visit (bring hand sanitizer).

Push for vehicle delivery

This is the part where most dealers can fall flat. While they may offer you mail-in document completion, financing online and numerous vehicle options, they still make you pick up the car purchased online.

However, as with everything else at a dealership, this can be negotiable. Speak with your salesperson and determine the possibility of vehicle delivery at no extra charge.

Also note that some dealerships are beginning to offer standard vehicle delivery for online customers to boost sales. This is a considerable benefit to you.

Find out if delivery will incur an additional cost or if it is provided free of charge. I recently purchased a 2009 Cadillac SRX (pictured above) and they added a 600$ delivery charge! Buying a car online is fantastic if you find the right combination of dealership, vehicle selection, paperwork completion options and delivery.

In many cases you can realize dramatic benefits over buying a car in person. However, do not be surprised if your local dealerships do not offer some of these options. It just might be that their online sales department is more window dressing than anything else. Shopping through auto brokers or used car options may offer you the benefits you seek.
